Planting Tips for Garlic

When to plant:

Depends on you location. Garlic grows well between USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 5a and 8b. Planting usually occurs between September and November. You want to make sure you have roots about six weeks before the first freeze.

How to plant:

Plant garlic with the pointed side up. Plant about three inches in the ground, and six inches apart. If you have soil that drains well, you can plant on a flat bed, but the preferred technique is on a raised bed with the seed above the water level, and the roots in the water level. Place a blanket of mulch about three inches deep around the garlic seed to keep the ground from heaving.

Fertilizing:

Use an organic fertilizer high in phosphorus and low in nitrogen.

Harvesting:

Most people judge by looking at the leaves. When the leaves begin to brown, it is time to begin looking at the garlic. Genlty break the soil away from a few garlic bulbs. If the garlic bulb appears to be of good size, and you can feel the developed cloves inside, then it is time to harvest. If they look too small than you may need to wait awhile longer. Don't wait too long. If the leaves turn completely brown, then you may end up with inedible bulbs.
