The history of this corn is interesting. in 1846, Robert Reid moved to Illinois. He planted a plot of Gordon Hopkins Seed corn. From that crop, he selected the best seeds to replant for the following season. That crop failed. He then planted a corn native to the plains of Illinois called Little Yellow. The Gordon Hopkins Seed crossed with the Little Yellow Seed. His son, James continued to perfect the strain. He continually selected the best ears from each year and in 1891, his corn won the highest award from the Illinois state fair, and in 1893, he won the highest award at the World's Fair.
